Swedish file sharer cleared on appeal

Not enough proof
Tue Oct 03 2006, 08:26
THE FIRST file sharer to be convicted in Sweden has walked free on appeal after a Judge ruled that there was not enough technical proof presented in the case.

The 29-year-old man from Västerås in central Sweden had been charged with sticking the Swedish film Hip Hip Hora online.

However, according to thelocal.com, the Swedish Court of Appeal decided that it had not seen have sufficient proof that the film was uploaded from the man's computer.

Coppers who investigated the case are at a bit of a loss as to what to do next. They had seized the man's computer and analysed his hard-drive and still could not get enough proof to satisfy the Judges.

If the standard of proof is as high as the Court of Appeal demands, it will be hard for the film industry and other interest groups to get a conviction in the Swedish courts.
