Asus accused of tweaking Springdale boards for press

PAT in Springdale kicks Intel's Canterwood butt

AN ARTICLE on Tom's Hardware Pages accuses number one mobo manufacturer Asus of being economical with the truth after it sent the site a press sample significantly different from the ones you can buy in the shops.

According to the site, Asus sent it a Asus P4P800 motherboard to test, very different from those sold to punters. Suspicions aroused by testers meant they went out and bought one from a shop which turned out to be a different kettle of fish altogether.

Asus appears to have managed to switch on Canterwood PAT on the Springdale, yielding better results for the i865 chipset than might be expected.

PAT (performance acceleration technology), an Intel marchitecture buzz word, is not supposed to be implemented in the 865 but only in the 875 "Canterwood" chipset. But, said the Pabster, Intel has now stepped in and told Asus to cut it out.

Intel had claimed that PAT could not be implemented in the 865PE "Springdale" chipset, but the Pabster staff say there's a back door open that clever board designers can exploit.

Why is that important anwyay? Well, that's because the Canterwood boards are supposed to sell at a premium. And if you can use bread and butter chipsets to get the same results, why go for the "bonanza" the i875 is supposed to bestow? The Canterwood chipset costs more than the Springdale, and it's probably that that's raised the blood pressure of Chipzilla.
