OpenGL 2.0 favours Glslang over Nvidia's CG

And here are the votes

NVIDIA SURE put a lot of effort to popularise CG, and has eventually decided to offer this to ARB(Architecture Review Board) - the body that is responsible for the OpenGl project with a dozen members.

Of course, Nvidia is one of the most important companies in this industry and was one of the first supporters of the OpenGL API but it is still not a full member of this board.

Its current status is as an associate member, Nvidia's representative is Kurt Akeley one of the creators of OpenGL and a graphic architect at Graphzilla.

On July 26th, Nvidia announced that it's willing to propose the CG based language to ARB, the language that is a "high-level shading language which NVIDIA developed in close collaboration with Microsoft(r) Corporation". Ironically enough.

A few weeks back, the OpenGL working group, a subset of ARB members, voted for which shading language should be used in OpenGL 2.0.

There were two choices, Nvidia's CG and 3Dlabs' proposed language called Glslang.

The OpenGL working group chose Glslang with six votes for Glslang, and one for cg, while two of the voters abstained.

So OpenGL 2.0 will use Glslang as shading language.

Anyway we are glad that Nvidia showed courage and decided to offer its language for free and we hope that the OpenGL working group made a right decision.

The next ARB meeting is scheduled for September 18 and 19 so we will see what happens then. ยต
