Intel puts money, mouth behind anti-SCO campaign

So does IBM. Microsoft doesn't
Mon Jan 12 2004, 07:23
CHIP GIANT INTEL has pledged cash and support to a fund aimed at defending open source lawsuits that the SCO Group is threatening.

The Wall Street Journal, quoting a representative, said Intel was worried that SCO hadn't got down to spelling out details about any infringement of intellectual property rights.

According to the Journal, the Intel rep said that because of that, it was hard for the open source community to fix and problems, if there are any problems.

The amount of Intel's contribution isn't stated, but Chipzilla, along with IBM and others, is putting money into the Open Source Development Labs, based in Oregon.

But ODSL, again according to the newspaper, has already got pledges of $3 million and wants to raise $10 million for the fund.

Again, according to the paper, SCO CPU Darl McBride said that legal action against an unnamed Linux user will kick into action by February.

This fund is separate from another cash pool started by Red Hat last year. Trink Guarino, who surfaced into public view last week to downplay the significance of an IBM memo we revealed, said the ODSL fund won't contribute to its own legal fight against SCO.

Microsoft doesn't appear to be putting any money into the fund. ยต
