Sony Blu-ray recorders to debut December

Regional codes raise their demonic heads
Tuesday, 3 October 2006, 09:50
TROUBLED MANUFACTURER Sony is to start selling two Blu-ray recorders in Japan this December, according to nikkei.net.

That follows a November release from Panasonic but Blu-ray is still lagging behind Toshiba's rival HD DVD putative standard, which has been available since the end of July.

The wire said a 500GB Blu-ray recorder will cost a jaw dropping ¥300,000 ($2,500), while a 250GB unit will cost ¥250,000, said nikkei.net. The Tosh unit has a 1TB hard drive and costs slightly more than the Blu-ray units.

Meanwhile, the same wire reports that the geographical codes will have three regions - one covering the Americas, Korea, Japan and South East Asia; Europe and the Middle East; and China, India, Russia and other nations.
