More on CrossFireX emerges

MORE INFO ON AMD's CrossFireX, or as the proles know it, quad-Crossfire has emerged.

Wily had some bits about it, and now we can flesh out more details.

First, it looks like this:

alt='quad_sli_on_790'
Oooh......, yummy.

Second, the connectors, as you can see, need only one to go between cards, unlike what they have now where two are needed. This in effect gives them a lot more headroom, allowing even more-way CrossFire if need, or more likely if there is ever a board that has the PCIe2 lanes. That is nit-picky though. Third, the notes on the slides shown to the Inq say that only Dual is supported at launch with Triple and Quad in Q1, January is strongly suggested.

Last we are treated to another bar graph, eerily similar to the one VR-Zone printed. This on is a bit more specific, and lists Crossfire scaling at about 1.75x, 2.75x and 3.25x for 2, 3 and 4 card configurations. If those numbers look odd to you, well they do to me also, but the graphs are not all that blurry or small.

In any case, we are only two driver drops away from Quad, so I wouldn't fret all that much. By the time you can get a Phenom at speed with an RS790 and 4 RV670s, or better yet R680s, the drivers will be there. I would look more toward National Kazoo Day than Humiliation Day though. µ

Nasty Little Set-up

The heat off that thing will be massive it's going to be hard for hardcore fans to water cool that set-up me thinks.

More Power Wasting Please

I'm going to have to go out and get my own Hoover dam so I can power this setup.

Historically laughable

We're going to look back on this technology in ten years and think, "just what in the hell were we thinking?"

It's all so eerily similar to the 3DFX days where we looked forward to plugging our video cards into the wall.

3 WATT

When Will this monster only consume 3 WATT like QX9850 when idle, and Max 77 WATT.

Hoe much Power will it require?

heat Generated???

The likely chances ofbeing a virgin for the rest of your life, as you speend a mortages to get 2fps increase for hald life 2 running at 20000*20000 ressolution!

Not enough space!

I assume the quad setup score going off the chart is supposed to show it's ludicrously powerful? Is it just me that actually reads that graph as "we've not tested it but we expect it to be up here somewhere..."

RE: Ok Nice But..

Hey, if you have enough money to afford a computer that can take advantage of CrossfireX and a monitor that can handle the resolution required to take advantage of it, you can afford a mail-order bride (or prostitute), too...

actually..

Actually from the expected $200 price a card thats $800 which is roughly half the cost of just TWO 8800ultras?!

And they are supposed to use about ~120watt each which is half an ultra?!

So not that unrealistic..

Huh?

if the rv670 performs slower than the 8800gt, then 2 rv670's would almost be a gtx, 3 would almost be an ultra, 4 would outperform any individual card... still i cant see how one could spend money on this...

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
