Transmeta introduces X86 boot speed upgrade

Vole opcodes demand 45 second boot. Or less...
Sunday, 2 March 2003, 16:12
THE HP, Transmeta-based Tablet PC will be the first recipient of a Crusoe CMS upgrade.

The upgrade lets Crusoe-based Tablet PCs move to CMS 4.4, speeding up boot time, and also making the launch time of applications on the computers faster, as well.

This upgrade includes Persistent Translation Technology (PTT) for the Crusoe platform.

Crusoe uses a translation paradigm and some of the memory to cache the translations. The T-cache, using PTT, lets the contents be forced to the hard drive before system shut down, and then resume on powerup, so cutting down on the translation.

This reminds us that Alpha's FX!32 technology had similar features. We are also reminded that the Great Vole of Software is so keen on boot time that to get a WinXP cert, a PC must boot in 45 seconds or less.

The link to the cunning upgrade is at the HP site, which you can find here. ยต
