A COMPANY'S former IT director is facing jail after it's alleged he cracked into his former work and warned two staff members they were about to be sacked.

According to Fox News, Stevan Hoffacker, a former Source Media executive now faces a charge of hacking into the company's computer system three years after he was dismissed, and tipping off employees whose jobs were also about to go.

Hoffacker, 53, could face five years in prison on the charge if convicted. He worked at Source Media and its predecessor company from 1998 to 2003.

It's alleged Hoffacker managed this advanced feat of hacking because he knew the user names and passwords of other employees. It's also claimed they had not changed them for three years.

Hoffacker found an email discussion between executives discussing how two employees were about to be fired. So ir's alleged he sent copies to the pair warning them.

Source Media claims that it had to hire a lawyer and redirect personnel to fix the security breach. They claim it cost them $100,000.
