APRIL ROADMAPS seen by the INQUIRER show the clock speeds Intel is expecting to achieve when it releases its Dempsey Xeon processor early next year.

And they also show that Intel will deploy the 1066MHz for these dual core processors built using 65 nanometre technology, as well as having two sets of 2MB cache. The clock speeds are slated to be 3.80GHz, 3.60GHz, 3.40GHz, 3.20GHz, 3GHz and 2.8GHz.

The firm will release two types of Dempsey - including an MV medium power SKU (stock keeping unit) at less than 105W TDP in the second quarter of next year.

We have to think in platforms if we're talking Intel talk these days. Dempsey in conjunction with the Greencreek chipset is part of the "Glidewell" platform, slated for Q1 of 2006.

Another "platform" will be released in the second quarter called Wyloway. This is for entry level workstations using the Presler processor and Cedar Mill, and a "next generation" socket.

Before any of this happens, expect to see the launch of Xeon 3.2GHz MV (mid power) and Xeon 3GHz LV (low power) processors with 2MB of cache and 800MHz buses in the third quarter. These will be priced at $488 and $519 respectively, and will precipitate price cuts on existing Xeons between 3.6GHz and 3GHz. Intel will also release a 2.8GHz processor then, and later in the year a 3.8GHz Xeon at $850.

Intel has no immediate plans to change pricing for its Xeon MP family.

Intel will introduce its 667MHz system bus Itaniums running at speeds of 1.66GHz and in two flavours in the third quarter. The 9MB cache version will cost $4,600 plus, the 6MB cache version $2,000 plus.

The "Sossaman" processor, and a low voltage version of that, which are scheduled for release in the first half of 2006 and based on the E7520 chipset, appears on the Intel server roadmap this time round.

Sossaman is a dual core processor based on Yonah and will have a TDP of 31W, while the LV version will have a TDP of 15W. They will clock at 2GHz and 1.67GHz respectively. µ
