Apple claims to have outsold the Blackberry

Jobs warns of doom ahead
Wednesday, 22 October 2008, 09:59

TOYMAKER Apple claims to have sold more of its Iphones in the last quarter than the market-leading Blackberry smartphone.

The Jobs’s mob press office claims that it has got a 26 per cent profit jump in the last quarter thanks in large part to sales of its new Iphone 3G.

Research in Motion reported it sold 6.1 million BlackBerry smart phones in the quarter that ended August 30. Apple claims it sold 6.9 million of its Iphone 3Gs.

If that is the case it means that it sold more 3G Iphones in the last quarter than it did its entire stock of 2G versions. Which we have to admit is no mean feat.

Steve Jobs made an unexpected appearance in a conference call with analysts yesterday to discuss the results. He claimed the result made Apple the world's third largest mobile phone company, based on revenues.

Of course, he had to fiddle the books a bit to make this surprising statement. To reach the thin white duke’s figures you have to measure the sales in terms of revenue and not units and divide by your shoe size while thinking of a number between one and ten. It is not really how things are done, but we are sure that MacWorld will report it as a true statement.

Apple's results are really good and it is hard to find a single member of the tame US tech press who will not uses terms like ‘blockbuster’ to describe them.

However analysts were alerted that there might be something wrong by Steve’s manifestation at the conference call. Sure enough Jobs mentioned that economic weakness will eat into Apple's business through the "holidays" and beyond.

He said that PCs with lower prices were likely to win the day for the next year and of course Apple makes jolly expensive PCs for those with more money than sense.

Fortunately, Apple is sitting on $US25 billion in cash so it should have no real problems in riding out the storm, but it is going to be a while before anyone sees any sales like this.

Mac sales growth will be hit further as educational institutions cut back on computer purchases, he warned.

One of the other things that Apple’s tame press missed was the fact that while the company’s profit topped Wall Street's expectations it fell short of expected sales.

Wall Street had expected the company to sell $US8 billion worth of gear, but it didn’t manage it. While the Iphone is doing well the Ipod and Mac sales are tanking. µ

RECORD MAC SALES

I'm not an apple lover, and don't own ANY of their products (I quit at the //E) but I heard many times yesterday they had record mac sales. How can you say they are tanking. CNBC Fast money said it etc. You can read "SURGING 21% MAC SALES" up from last year here:
http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/ticker/article.aspx?Feed=OBR&Date=20081021&ID=9302682&Symbol=AAPL

Also if they didn't defer the iPHONE revenue it would have put them at 11.68B in revunue. So did they really miss?
"The company said its fourth-quarter figures would have been better if it fully accounted for iPhone revenue. Including deferred revenue from the iPhone, sales in the quarter would have reached $11.68 billion and $2.44 billion in net income."

Damn, isn't that more many than Intel makes? 25B in the bank and no debt makes this stock a no brainer all the way until next xmas unless it hits $175+ then I'd look into selling it. There are some seriously great buys out there. Intel, Apple, Rimm, Microsoft, Nvidia etc. All severely hit (most 1/2 off, Nvidia can be had for about 20% of Dec prices), and all not much different than last Dec. Most having record quarters/sales/profits etc.

If it weren't for a defective run from TSMC Nvidia would still have profits, so considering it won't have a defect on the next rev (or even now since it's fixed) their losses are temporary. Everyone else on this list is a KILLER value. Nvidia over the next year or two will be also. Patience is a virtue...LOL. Tech will lead us out of this crap, stock up now. Nowhere else can you find such easy money. Most of these will double (close enough) in the next 2.5yrs or less. Try to make that kind of money in your savings account. These are all debt free with Billions on the books last I checked and have no need for credit either.

A different angle of patronisation

Just because I prefer to buy far superior computers that do what they say on the label; doesn't mean to say I have more money than sense! What I actually think you intended to say is that I have more style and creative flair. One is common sense the other; academic - a bit like people. Apple have produced some fantastic hardware over the years - hardware that gets the juices going. Speaking personally, I have a BlackBerry and it is THE WORST 'mobile' phone I have ever used. I would hardly call it smart. For example; Bluetooth.... all my Apple devices seem to understand that this is a 'wireless' technology. With my BlackBerry I require the use of a USB cable. Hardly smart. I regret the day I swapped my Nokia N95 for such an uninspiring piece of techno junk. The good news is; I am getting this 'Smart' mobile replaced with an iPhone 3G and the day cannot come soon enough. The word to use to describe any Apple product is 'Inspiring' - anything MS-DOS PC-based is the antitheses - I would put BlackBerry in the same category.

One Point Missing

One thing that was not brought up, and I am surprised, is that the 3G is a gadget product, and newly announced. It is also purchased by a lot of fanatics who have to have it the second it comes out. So Apple gets a great burst of sales, but that number is not going to be sustainable, whereas RIM will sell in and around the same number of units each quarter. I'd be very surprised if at the end of the year the numbers are even close.. unless of course Apple screws its customers further by bringing out another updated model.

iPhone vs. Blackberry

Gary, you talk about Apple bringing out another model of iPhone (or an updated one) like it would be cheating, yet RIM is constantly developing and releasing new models. That is how this works. They make a product that everyone wants to have and sell a lot of them. They then reinvest those dollarpounds into developing an even better version to make more dollarpounds to reinvest into the next gen, and so on and so forth, ad infinitum. If RIM were sitting on their original Blackberries, you wouldn't even know who RIM is these days. It's a development, marketing, and profit cycle, and it is present in EVERY company in the cellphone market.

It may be

But I dont think so. However Apple has launched a very good looking and touchscreen phone but Blackberry has different segment of market. And still Blackberry handsets as well as Blackberry accessories are in great demand n the market. Visit http://www.fommy.co.uk/blackberry-accessories.htm for more Blackberry accessories of Blackberry handsets.
