Radeon HD 3870 X2 tips up in China

Dual-chip extravaganza
Tuesday, 22 January 2008, 10:54

THOSE AWAITING the coming of ATI's dual-chip extravaganza, the Radeon HD 3870 X2, barely have a smidgen longer to wait. Indeed, retail boxes of the card are already starting to show up on shelves.

As can be seen oon OCWorkbench, HIS appears to be first out of the gate with its card, spotted on the shelves in China, selling for around $550. The card itself is running at 825/1000MHz and has 1GB of RAM all told, according to the box.

The card is truly a monster, a fact that is only really appreciated by looking at the back of the thing, covered in black metal that holds on the gigantic full-face heatsink assembly.

ATI has been quietly seeding cards to its select review buddies - of which there seem to be fewer and fewer these days - and it wont be long until the final scores start leaking out. Those hardware boys find it difficult to control themselves.

For those also suffering from a fit of tourrettes, calm thyselves by checking out the pics here. µ

the 3870X2 pictured only has GDDR3 not GDDR4 as on the normal 3870

GDDR what?

I thought that the 3850 cards had GDDR3 and the 3870 cards GDDR4. This is supposed to be a 3870X2 yet it has GDDR3 memory.
Not quite twice the card as the X2 implies.
