No one in this business can guarantee anything for certain - Ian McNair, VP at HPQ
You can get solid state drives with faster flash memory but in that case the drive ends up too expensive. If you use slower flash memory you get some decent storage space but the drive ends up slow. It is at the same time slow and cheaper. The average Joe has to pay huge premium to get rid of the mechanic in the drive but he also gets far less storage space. The solid state drive speed is just slightly faster if at all. It is faster than some 2.5 inch drives probably the one with 5400 RPM maybe even 7200. But it can not cope with 10.000 or 15.000 RPM drives.
I got a lot of mails about SS Drives.People obviously have such a high hopes about them. We don't think they are evil but they are expensive but their time is yet to come. Give it a few quarters if not years and they might even kill the mechanical parts in drives.
Of course, when the prices go down and this marchitecture becomes more popular, the OCZ and other memory boys will go down this road. ยต
