Fan copped heatsinks on display

Intel Developer Forum Interesting little numbers

JMC HAD THREE INTERESTING HEATSINKS on display at IDF. There were two machine cut ones and a counter-rotating dual bladed 1U fan. The counter-rotating one is a mere 40*50*38mm, and has two blades spinning in opposite directions. This produces 24CFM of air flow from a small package, but it isn't all that quiet. It is on the lower left below.

The other two fans are versions of the same thing. They are the Phoenix 70 and the Copper Phoenix 70. Both are 70mm fans in a machine cut enclosure with a rather hefty base. The non-copper one is aluminum, and is shown here without the fan itself. Both are designed for Nocona systems, and provide about the same cooling, ~.29c per watt.

There are big differences between them though, and the first is cost. The copper one costs about $35-40 while the aluminum one is about $15. For that extra money you get two things, the first is a lot of copper. That copper weighs about a kilogram, and the aluminum one a lot less.

All is not lost however, for the extra money and mass, you get extra good cooling. This allows you to run the fans slower for less noise and less power consumed. The copper one runs the fan at 5000RPM while the aluminum is spinning at 6600RPM. Pick your poison.
