T-Mobile backs down on Android cap

G1 does not mean 1GB
Friday, 26 September 2008, 10:44

T-MOBILE HAS BACKED DOWN on its bizarre 1GB data bandwidth cap on the new Google Android phone.

Initially, when T-Mobile introduced the G1, it said that punters would get 'unlimited data' if they paid $35-per-month.

But buried in the contract was the news that if you downloaded more than a GB on your nice shiny new phone in a month, T-Mobile would reduce your speed to that of an asthmatic snail carrying more than 21 Kg excess baggage through Heathrow on its way to a snail stomping competition in Paris.

Not surprisingly the operator quickly came under fire for the limit, which is absolutely pointless if you want to use the phone regularly to view maps, check e-mail, watch Youtube videos or browse the Internet.

Red-faced T-Mobile executives have removed the 1Gb limit from its policy statement. But it didn't say that users would have true unlimited download capability.

Instead it said that terms for its new data plans had not been worked out yet.

In other words they are hoping that when the dust has settled it might be able to go back to some ridiculous restrictions and no one will complain too much.

We will. µ
