US COMMS provider Comcast, which is famous for its bandwidth cap, has announced two new tiers of service for heavy residential downloaders.
The two new plans, dubbed 'Extreme' and 'Ultra' clock in at 50 and 22 Mbps of downstream respectively and 10 and 5 Mbps of upstream.
It will mean that if you pay for the 'Performance' plan you will get a big jump from 8 to 16 Mbps.
The Extreme and Ultra tiers come in at $139.95 and $62.95 a month. This is nearly three times that of Comcast's standard monthly residential service.
There is also a new business tier called 'Premium' which comes in at 22/5 Mbps up/down for $99.95 a month.
However what is so bizarre about the new plan is that subscribers of the residential plans will get no higher cap over the 250GB monthly limit.
This means that you will be paying shedloads more dosh to rush to your cap that much faster. In its press release Comcast said that punters can "download a high-def movie in about 16 minutes, a standard-def movie in about 5 minutes and a standard-def TV show in a matter of seconds."
This is all well and good but it means that you could blow all your bandwidth allowance in a few hours. µ

Still better than many UK ISP with only 4Gb a month Allowance and Vigirn media going to 50Mb will most likely keep 4gb allowance and keep uplaod at 512kb or may be 786kb

so when u think ur getting 50mb download and 10mbps upload with 250gb allowance (currently no uk 50mb service)
or 22mbps download and 5mbps upload with 250gb allowance and UK only gets 20mbps download and 512kb upload with 4gb allowance, id says its a better deal then what we brits get !!!!!
this is a disturbing trend, cause i think it will become a trend. All the other companies are watching comcast and if its customers (Ediots) dont stand up, we end up getting screwed. No shame what so ever in their game.
Since No additional data can be added, its' in Comacast intrest to clear line as fast as possible, keeping it open for larger subscriber pool. Cost is too high for No additional data, Save Your Money, Avoid Problems with large files like Blu Ray could bring & download in your off times, saving$70 to $120 monthly, Telco probably has No cap, as its Old to Data transfer.

Higher speed Frees Up Line time, Making Comcast additional revenues with more subscribers per line serviced each second. up to 10X more, isn't that enough?
STeWie drashek.
The new services will also require installation of a DOCSYS 3 modem and maybe new router. Many routers only connect at 10mbps on the modem interface.

Also keep in mind that you are unlikely to reach those speeds for many downloads due to server loads and distance. Many file transfers don't use all the bandwidth on existing service levels.
Just called comcast in my area (PCB, Fl) and they are not aware of these plans yet. Too bad I wanted to upgrade :(
Comcast - "I'll sell you a nickel and 2 pennies for a dime! that means you get 3 coins for only one!"

Need downloads - get two cheep accounts and mux them in house :P

And so it begins a 250gb cap can’t wait to see this number get smaller and smaller over the years, that’s like having unlimited minutes on your cell phone and your cell phone provider telling you that they are going to charge you the same amount but now you’ll only have 250 minutes of talk time…and here is just another way the U.S. dollar is losing its value, at least on the consumers side
