Psystar has now shipped at least two machines

Gadget blog gets hands dirty

IT APPEARS THAT Psystar, maker of genetically modified Apples, has shipped a second machine out of its production facility.

Engadget got its mitts on one of the company's 'Open PCs' running, of course, Apple OSX. Duly posting a mind-numbing video of the computer booting up (two minutes of a blank screen ahoy) the chaps there redeemed themselves by at least posting a little Q&A along with some benchmarks.

For the techies, here's the deal: a Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L motherboard running the G31 Express chipset, a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo and an 8600 GT graphics card. The Gigabyte motherboard obviously incorporates standard Intel components for HD audio and networking although it obviously lacks the EFI BIOS that Apple's own motherboards have - part of the Psystar trickery is an EFI emulator.

The benchmarks work out pretty much where you'd expect, with the 2.2GHz processor lagging behind the latest official Imacs and Macbook Pros, which sport Penryn processors of 2.5GHz and upwards. However, with a 512MB video card, the Psystar did manage a decent win over all but the latest top-end Imac.

Hands on, the machine does appear to have a few problems: the fan controller doesn't interface with OSX, so the whole cooling system runs full tilt and is slightly deafening.

The Apple System Profile software doesn't understand all the components of the motherboard, so even though things like audio and networking are functioning, Leopard doesn't exactly know how. There's also very little hope of ever re-installing OSX - putting the CD in and rebooting does precisely squat.

If you want the full benchmark deets, you can hit them up here. ยต

Are ADAPTERS Legal?

Think Nice Idea has gone Sour. EFI, an Encryption Thingie. Seems to be Sore Spot.

While in theory craming Intel machine with OSX might someday work, This Rig (&thats what it is) is NOT as Great as Hoped.
First Plystar is going to have troubles if NOT already owned by Apple, IN Court & that means Court will probably let Apple decide.
After All, Most of that hardware stuff is Patented, yet who knows.
Also as it won't reload leopard, it must be supercompressed install that general public won't ever be able to duplicate.
WARNING Will Robinson, WARNING.Intruder Alert. Maybe Drs. Smith Built IT.

There you go

What this goes to show is that if OSX were reprogrammed to be compatible with all hardware like Windows is supposed to be, it would most likely be more bloated and bugged out than Vista is. Apple says OSX is better, but in actuality, they only escape the issues MS has because they only run on very specific and organized hardware which is detrimental to open computing and encourages Apple's monopoly. Personally, I think either Jobs wants too much control (that couldn't be it, no way O_o), or they lack the programming to make it run on everything they could or otherwise why not try to topple the MS monopoly on the PC OS arena. Its kind of like saying that the PS3 OS runs games better than Vista, it may be true, but then again, all the damned hardware is the same. I can't help thinking how much more streamed line, fast and efficient Vista could be if it had been optimized only to run on my pc.
