Old time virus returns

Virus nostalgia is not what it used to be
Tuesday, 31 January 2006, 08:04
THE GOOD old days when viruses were just out to destroy your computer seem to have returned.

AV companies are warning all users to scan their computers by 3 February to deal with the Nyxem virus.

Nyxem, does not seem to be interested in adapting your computer into a zombie spam network. Instead all it wants to do is delete Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Acrobat files on infected machines on February 3.

It even goes back to the old traditional technique of promising you porn if you open the attachments on e-mail messages carrying the virus. The virus raids address books to find e-mail addresses to send itself to it also does a network search just in case it has been downloaded into a company network.

AV companies are not too worried about companies being hit by the virus. After all any company that does not do a virus check at least once a month probably deserves what it gets. But home users could be seriously walloped by Nyxem.

Or so it says here
