The bill was primarily nixed by Democrats and Republicans concerned that it would legalise millions of the currently illegal immigrants in the country and mean the loss of American jobs.
However, much of the bill was actually given over to other proposals, one of which was the expansion of the H1-B
Vista Visa programme that allows skilled foreigners to come and work in the States. With some of the world's top
talent looking to move to Silicon Valley and Seattle, the lack of availability of these Visas is, the Vole pronounces,
a major problem.
"The nation continues to witness a dramatic decline in the number of native born computer science graduates. As a result, technology companies like Microsoft rely on the H-1B visa and employment-based green card programs to deliver an adequate supply of highly qualified employees to help maintain our competitive position," the company said in a statement.
In his book, Silicon Valley presidential fave Barack Obama proposes a back to basics approach in American Education that will result in better.more science and maths graduates, a pledge said to have gone down well at the Google campus in Mountain View when he spoke there. That, however, doesn't address today's problems.
However, neither will the American legislature, as the issue is now expected to die until after the Presidential elections. µ
