Alcatel to buy Nortel 3G unit

French polish off mobile push
Friday, 1 September 2006, 14:05
ALCATEL IS SET to buy Nortel's 3G network unit for $320m, in a bulking up exercise that complements the recent agreement to combine with Lucent.

Business Week is reporting that that latter mega-merger is not liked by all but should still go through.

All being well, the thrilling name of the new company will be (FX: trumpets, apes swinging from beams, peacocks, drum roll, exit man pursued by bear) Alcatel Lucent. ยต
