Apple is worth more than Google

Life is like a box of fruit pastels
Thursday, 14 August 2008, 10:01

AFTER CENTURIES in the computing industry, fruit-themed toymaker, Apple is finally worth a fair bit of money.

In the movie Forrest Gump, the character of the same name made a fortune on the back of investing in Apple in the early days. Now if Gump still has those shares he would be even wealthier.

After yesterday's trading, Apple was officially worth $159 billion. The cash cow Google was worth just $157 billion. The reason that Apple, and therefore Gump, are worth so much are the Ipod and Iphone which have taken their markets by storm.

While the outfit has been around for a really long time and should have been worth a fair bit, the truth is that is has been stuck for a fair bit of the time. It is only since the Ipod and the Iphone have come around that Apple has been a player in anyone's game of monopoly.

So getting out of making over-priced but very nice looking computers with a toy operating system and into over-priced and nice looking entertainment toys, has been a money spinner for the fruit themed sultans of smug. µ

Once again, don't bother with any facts...

" the truth is that is has been stuck for a fair bit of the time. "

This of course would be the truth in Nick's little 'I'll just make up the facts' world so he can churn out another "article", and I use that term loosely, about Apple.

If of course you go by some actual DATA, you would see that the value of Apple has gone up ~20X over the past 5 years (take a look at a 5yr stock chart if you don't believe me)

Oh, and the iPhone, IPod (and throw in the iTunes) accounted for ~33% of Apple's revenue last quarter... so the 20X growth, and I'm just spitballing here, is probably not due to just the gadgets. Additionally, as if you care, the Mac revenue grew 50% year on year and represented the HIGHEST growth rate of all the major revenue segments (source SEC- - 10Q, of course this could just be a cooked up document as it only gets filed with the SEC). Kind of blows your mind and doesn't fit with the perception you want to reinforce?

Of course I'm just a laymen (but not a lazy-man like Nick) who actually reads up on things rather than just making stuff up - so I'll trust your "story" as it seems to be well sourced and clearly has lots of facts supporting it.

So Nice work! Just one question, though:

Do you ever actually just hesitate, you know just for a split second, when making this stuff up and think - maybe I should do a minute of research and actually check the facts? Nahhh... that would just be a buzz-kill and risk screwing up your conclusions, eh?

Rather sad what this site is devolving into.

One or two factual inaccuracies

"So getting out of making over-priced but very nice looking computers" Building and selling more Macs now than ever = getting out of?
"with a toy operating system" So any 64 bit customised version of Unix is a toy? You'd better go tell Sun and IBM what they've been doing wrong then.
"and into over-priced and nice looking entertainment toys" Economics 101, if people in huge numbers will pay what you're asking for something then it's not over priced.
Now can Nick think up any real reasons for Apple's stock price going up being a bad thing (other than him trying to short it that is)?

Oh dear...

I guess what with the school holidays and all the Inq must be using some work experience drones to file experimental 'articles'.

I can only assume this 'Nick Farrell' is one such person who's 'article' escaped from the sub-ed's inbox to the outside world accidentally, before it could be ripped apart by more experienced writers for being totally devoid of any factual elements and consequently of no interest to anyone.

Very very poor. See me after school.

Shesh everybody lost its humor!?

Nice note.
Because the article isn´t really more than a humourous note that Apple is worth more than Google.
Mr. Wrongonthefacts comment isn´t really noteworthy but still this steady silly rudeness without any knowledge ticks me off.
There is nothing wrong with the article nor many other on the Inq. sure take it all with a grain of salt if it is posted under comments. But where would i else get a less pr pass along aproach on IT? From a 14 year old with his blog?!
Anyways Billy must be having a party as he (or his company for nitpickers) holds a nice share of 40% (last time i checked).
And truth is that Stevie pulled this all of with THE best marketing of this century (something NextOs lacked...). No Mac Book gets manufactured by Apple but only its logo and the highest Q.A. from the cheapest ODM on the block (they also make all the Medion devices).
The uptake on the fruity machines has of course nothing to do with the gadgetry success, sleek design and killer marketing. Rather its Apples huge R&D cost, supreme programming and assembly.
Right you flamers and fanboys?!

Actually He was right.

I'd say the author was dead on correct: " the truth is that is has been stuck for a fair bit of the time. "

YES. Prior to 5 years ago, Apple was pretty much a publicly traded flat tire. Only when the iPod took off did the company show any life.

To Wrongonfacts

The auther rightfully stated that Apple's stock price had been stuck for a fair bit of time and you flame him because Apple has been going up for the last 5 years?

If you take your blinders off you will see that Apple stock has traded for much longer than 5 years and that it was dead money for over a decade between 1987 and 1998!

Maybe YOU should check your facts before writing silly comments.

Sense of humor?

Nick and the rest of the Inq staff report the news with a sense of humor that is very much needed, as evidenced by some of the outraged response commentary on this article. The big joke is that Apple is worth more than Google and the fact is that prior to Steve Jobs return to the company, Apple was pretty much dead in the water when Gil Amelio was running things there. Even the most obsessed faithful Apple fanboy cannot deny those facts. It's time to switch to decaf, get over it, and listen to some Amy Winehouse on your iPod. LOL!!!

To Right (write?) on the facts

My apologies, when I read Apple has been stuck for a fair bit of time - I missed the part that said Apple has been stuck for a fair bit of time, EXCEPT for the last 5 years.

And anyone who thinks 20X growth over the last 5 years was due in large part to the iPod and "getting out of the PC business", is someone who I want investing in the market as those are the people that help create opportunities for people who actually do analysis.

If you don't think Mac growth, which oh by the way grew at 50% last year, accounts for >50% of Apples revenue alone, and is their highest margin product is not the main driver for the stock growth, then I have some swamp land to sell you. (maybe I'll even throw in an iPOD).

It is rather funny that there are so many haters out there who are so willing to overlook the facts and meld the story to their preconceptions. Actually, this does not surprise me, but it doe surprise me that there is noone apparently left on the INQ staff who apparently cares about the quality of articles - it's not like this is a one-off article by Nick. Well over 1/2 the 'articles' he writes are about Apple and the next positive Apple article I read from him will be the first. In contrast there are several other writers on the INQ who are far more objective, analytical and have beaten Nick to the punch on the Apple news. Of course Nick combats this with making up new facts (like the likelihood of the new kill switch mechanisms article) so he can justify repeating a story and spin it how he thinks it should be spun. Remember the article on how investors were no longer happy with Apple stock? How's that "analysis" working out?

Comment or not, the article is wrong and full of misinformation - please forgive me for trying to present something of value. When you consider the source/writer of the article, I guess it should be expected that facts are optional and I should just follow lock-step. My bad.

FYI - the iPod was introduced Nov'01, and the stock was essentially FLAT for the 2 years after that. While it is certainly a contributor to Apple's growth, for some to say "getting out of over-priced PC's" is quite frankly someone who has no grip on reality and cares only about getting propaganda out, to heck with the facts! For those that think the article is an honest representation, I suggest you re-adjust your tinfoil hats.

Correction:

Google is worth more.. to mankind.. than Apple.

Michael Dell once said that if he was running apple, he'd close it down and give all the money back to the shareholders.

wrongonthefacts, where is your sense of humour?

Have you read the inq before or is this page on an anti-apple-webpage list?

Apple is worth so much because it's stuff is so overpriced that it's making a fortune ripping off its customers. But these customers don't care about value, but do care about thinking that others think that they are part of an approved club.

Apple is just another gadget maker, but they make their stuff easy for the masses to use. I'm not sure I want to be part of a club which appears to be full of not very bright sheep.

I wonder how many of those sheep bought apple stocks 15 years ago? I'd guess not many, because back then it wasn't cool too. Heh heh.

Don't believe the hype.

... and why do we care?

I don't understand why people are so for or against Apple! I'm turned off by Apple largely because they cause so much polarization between people!

I get it! They design very beautiful and functional crap that design conscious people by in droves ... who cares, get over it. They are just a company that markets crap like any other company, as far as I'm concerned they make junk that I'm not gonna buy just like any other gadget maker.

I wish we could just get over the Apple love/hate and get on with it.
