GOVERNMENT MINISTERS in Taiwan ROC are accusing their brethren across the straits of waging an information war on the island, including the use of Trojans to lever open government databases.

According to English language newspaper the Taipei Times, the democratically elected government Cabinet on the island accuses mainland China of recruiting "an army of hackers" to attack 30 government agencies and 50 private companies.

One of the companies first attacked was Via Technologies, according to another local newspaper.

The article claims that Chinese sponsored hackers have broken into the National Police Administration, the Ministry of National Defence, the Central Bank of China and the Central Election Commission.

And prime minster Yu Shyi-kun has ordered all government departments to institute a nationwide survey to check whether their systems have been compromised.

Meanwhile, Taiwan News claims that the Trojans started to appear two months ago and quotes a government representative describing the alleged attack as a systematic and planned attempt to compromise and paralyse the Taiwanese government. µ
