Electron beam to carve out chip designs

ADVANTEST AND Fujitsu have formed a joint venture to create prototypes of silicon chips using an electron beam.

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the method will supersede the usual method of making such prototypes with photomasks.

The paper said Fujitsu will take a 55 per cent stake in the JV, and will build facilities for the process at its factory in Kuwana.

It will start making 65 nanometre chips in the first half f next year and add protoype 45 nanometre chips to the lineup in 2008.
