Unlike 2x2GB kits we have seen before, this is a quad memory kit, consisting of four 1GB DIMM modules - a necessary move in order to bring the price down to a more affordable level. It also increases the possibility of overclocking the memory and enabling motherboards to give stable current to all populated DIMMs.
Packaging gains some weight, but it still fits regular retail stands.
Kits are known as PC2-6400 Platinum and PC2-6400 Gold, corresponding to colour of the XTC heatsink on the modules.
These kits are really useful for 64-bit software, but if you are using 32-bit operating system - you are going to
lose from 512 to 1.25GB of system memory on PCI addressing. We are working with some motherboard vendors in order to
give flexible PCI addressing space option in BIOS, just like many workstation and server boards.
Now, with quad-channel memory kits out there, the only thing we lack is a 256-bit memory controller. Intel's V8 is already shipping with it, only thing missing there is the fact that it uses FB-DIMM DDR2 modules. However, Dual-Socket 775 known as Skulltrail is going to change that. Or, at least the type of memory used. ยต
