AMD bugged by bugs

B3 on the way to becoming B4
Thu Jan 10 2008, 17:29

WRITING HOME from CES 2008, hardware site Erenumerique (Digital Age) reports that AMD has shot itself once more in the foot.

According to the French site, while chatting up a couple of AMD’s employees they got word that AMD has received the first Phenom B3 silicon and... wait for it... *surprise* It’s still buggy!

Apparently AMD will be doing a (quote) “new spin” on the silicon.

Now, whether that means a B4 stepping or simply correcting the snafu outright, your guess is as good as ours.

According to Guillaume, the silicon won’t be around until May ’08. There’s also some interesting info about AMD’s ATI plans.

On a different note, the same parties reported that the first 45nm process results were “encouraging”. Go figure.

We sincerely wish AMD and its foot a hasty recovery. µ

AMD has bugs

There has obviously been some disturbance in the design processes at AMD, perhaps the Inq could get to the bottom of this? Use their journalistic "talents" to really investigate instead of writing snide "news" stories?

I don't believe for a minute that AMD will ever build in NY state. I live near the Luther Forest area and would be astonished if AMD ever did even start construction. And if I ever think of a way to get rid of those useless parasitical politicians who threw 1.5B$ into this farce...

On another note, who the heck is this so-called physician Thomas Stewart Von Drashek, MD? Is he insane or merely pretending to be so? Perhaps he is Andrew's alter ego? (or perhaps Andy is schitzo? Better get him a full mental health workup, Mike, before he goes postal.)

And as for his anti-American comments, listen you so-called MD, if it wasn't for the American techno-competence, you Euro-Peons would still be using carrier pigeons. We developed the computer into what it is today, Windows and all (unfortunately), and the Internet, which although WASN'T invented by that complete phoney Al "I created Global Warming with my hot air pronouncements" Gore, was invented and developed by American know-how. So next time you sit down at your computer, just remember that creative, inventive Americans made it all possible.

no way for AMD to compete

AMD will pretty soon, file for bankruptcy protection. Unless the company change it's strategy learn from APPLE, keeps it's mouth shuts and zips until product(s) release day.
Otherwise, whenever AMD announces a coming products, Intel will beat it to match if not better, worst, release prior AMD set date.
Phenom is one recent example. Intel will beat it and ready for it. Beside Intel 45nm die chips, the company could always bring back the hyperthreading within Quad core that makes the a Quad work like a Octa-core. On top of that, Intel could easily increase L2 cache size or additional bigger L3 cache. There's no way for AMD to compete. Unless, AMD could push phenom with minimal 3.0 ghz - 4.0 ghz at around $200 or less per piece with half of the current wattage the CPU consuming without any pre-announcement till the official release day.

Drugs?

Is that physician on drugs? I mean seriously can anyone EVER make sense of ANYTHING he says?

So?

It took Intel years to realise the P4 was a bug right from the beginning and never fixed it :-)

I completely disagree...

AMD ran out of left feet quarters ago. This was a head shot.

AMD learns from Intel's mistakes

And then they turn around and repeat them a generation later.

I had high hopes for native quad core, but the 65nm product looks like AMD's Netburst. I'd love to see a decent 45nm processor, but what I want to see is a new architecture that really surpasses both X2 and C2D.

Both AMD & Microsoft moved to U.S.S.R.

Maybe REDS can control THEM. However it maybe that theres NO central Government at all there. Union Of Soviet Socialist Republics is more unconquerorble due to open MASS Size, yet both Microsoft & AMD have chosen to establish most advanced facilities NEXT IN RUSSIA, not in #40 rated U.S.. Heck maybe someone in N.Y. actually expects something. BUGS are Americans Imaginations & complete lack of, well lets just says most English are deep dew dew. Or Maybe siberians just taste better TOASTED..

Different bug

It is most likely a different bug, one of the lesser ones, and may not be affecting correctness.

Skip 65nm?

If they skipped 65nm and jumped to 45nm and put more money into that they would a little better off.

Oy! Be there a Re-Spin doctor in the house?

Oy! Be there a Re-Spin doctor in the house?

AMD seems lacking in marketing and PR, especially in comparison to Chipzilla.

Poor Chiperella has lost her glass slipper, again? Curses to those wicked bigfoot step-inlaws.

On guard! I fear another swift quote may be cached by a poorridged eating bear.

Wrong foot ... again

Given the fact that a year ago Barcelona would have meant something ... I guess another 4 months won't do lot worse :) ... unless Intel goes to 32nm.

45nm phenom

i was thinking that when i first saw phenom single-threaded benchies..45nm will probably be the first high clocked phenom

Now if they....

could just figure out some way to blame Intel for this, they will be well on thier way to victory!!

Lie lie lie

I don't trust that source. Its pretty much a big lie, no one has got a B3 yet.

45nm

The "first good version" will be 45nm anyway, because 65nm will never be able to yield a 3GHz+ part within the given power envelope. If they manage 2,6GHz as 95W part in 65nm, then that would already be as good as it gets.

Remember the good ol' Clawhammer, in 130nm it couldn't soar either, started with 2GHz and the top bin was soon reached at 2.4GHz (3200+ - 3700+ socket 754).

But that is not a serious problem for AMD as long as Intel waits for them (Intel recently said, "no more than 3,2GHz in 2008"), it's just bad for us performance-hungry users.

no prob

AMD should take its time. There is no hurry.

Contortionist?

Hector's previous occupation must have been as a circus contortionist, given the frequency and ease with which he puts his foot in his mouth and his head up his ass.

Learning from the past

Well it seems that AMD learned from its mistakes ;-)

One more respin and the first good versions will be on 45nm.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
