AS THE DUST SETTLES on the Blu-ray HD DVD battleground, triumphant Sony has announced that the next batch of DVD-on-steroids players to hit the shelves will feature profile 2.0 support.
This will mean that, given a suitable broadband connection, your hi-def DVDs will phone home and download additional content from the internet.
Early indications are that downloadable extras will include additional scenes, commentaries, alternative endings, language tracks, ringtones editor's cuts and the like.
There are also disturbing rumours that real-time chat will be introduced, which is OK by this haq as long as I'm aloud to real-time shush.
And we're sure it won't be long before you'll be watching a crappy Handycam version of yet-to-be released films, complete with the sound of Russians coughing and munching popcorn.
Sony has announced two upcoming Blu-ray machines with Profile 2.0 support: the BDP-S350, available this summer for $399, which can be updated to the latest profile over the Internet when it's available; and the BDP-S550 ($499), which will ship with Profile 2.0 in the autumn. A forthcoming PS3 update will also add BD live functionality which, in addition to the aforementioned bobbins, will allow you to copy a scaled-down version of your disks to PSP. ยต

What I want to know is if this is a ploy to catch people with pirated copies of their movies?
How long ya' think it'll be before the bastards start pushing ads to your player with this?

Do we have to worry about our players being root-kitted?
If blue-ray is so great shouldn't this shit be able to fit on the disc? This seems awefull gimicky.
I thought the whole idea of BD was the insane amount of storage. What, you can't fit all the extra scenes and features on the disk to begin with? I would think that there would be enough space to store the movie +all the extras + my DNA sequence and then some.

I watch enough enough downloaded video to tie up my bandwidth limit for the month sometimes, can't imagine what would happen if i were to download extra scenes etc. To bad I have a 60GB download cap with my ISP....
The PS3 update will be coming in late March for 2.0. What most PS3 Blu fans are waiting for is DTS-HD MA decoding. Anyway the other features:

* The ability to copy PS3 Music and Photo playlists to a PSP system. We introduced the ability to create Music and Photo playlists on the PS3 in firmware update v2.0. Now you can easily export your playlists to your PSP.
* You can now play DivX and WMV format files that are over 2 GB.
* Resume Play - begin playing a DVD or BD disc from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you eject the disc and insert a different movie or game.
* Use your PSP as a remote control to play back your music files on your PS3 without turning on your TV.
This has been known for a while for the roadmap of Blu-Ray. Also with the blue-ray ecnryption authors will be able to change the encryption of a blu-ray disk in real time if they choose and also check keys within the blu-ray player to make sure nothing has been changed (to make sure you can not play "pirated" movies). Care for another dollop of DRM?

SM replies: Being part of a roadmap is not the same as being part of reality. The story is clearly about the fact that you can actually buy this stuff now.
Thank GOD that the BD+ Protection has been cracked...
long live hd-dvd.
if only you fools had suported hd-dvd, it had the lot, as most experts will now admit.
Not in my house anyway. I refuse to bring a cable from my phone connection to my living room.
They won't be remotely disabling MY hardware, thank you very much.
Besides, I'm sticking with DVD for the foreseeable future, thank you very much. It works, and this regional nonsense I defeated a while ago.
