Sun turns on the AMP

SUN HAS ANNOUNCED the availability of 'Sun Web Stack' which is intended to go head-to-head with the popular open-source web stack known as LAMP.

LAMP usually consists of Linux, Apache, Mysql and PHP (or Perl/Python).

Sun refer to the stack as an 'AMP' stack - and emphasising the Sun optimised stack can run on Solaris as well as Linux.

The company has unveiled the stack and enterprise support, at the O'Reilly Open Source Convention (OSCON) in Oregon, USA.

Sun has already released details of the stack on a new webstack addition to its website.

Sun is supporting the standard x86/x64 architectures, as well as its own Ultrasparc processors. Opensolaris is now expected to get Sparc support in November.

Sun later said that it is open-sourcing components of its Java System Web Server 7and Java System Web Proxy technologies under a BSD license.

Also at the conference Sun has announced the shipping of Sun Opensso Express, which is a version of Sun's Opensso (single sign-on) software but featuring enterprise support.

Additionally, Sun announced a partnership with hosting from Joyent - allowing developers a years free hosting on the Joyent network.
