Vista cool'n'quiet CPU shenanigans exposed

Letters Plus, The INQ upsets Canada, Turkey

Subject: ignorant jackass

your 'Chip man faces fear and loathing in Winnipeg' article was the most ignorant piece of trash I've ever read on this otherwise fine site. Are you an American, because you sure as hell sound like one? Either that or you're a slave to americas BS media machine of stereotyping places you have no f'n idea about. Travel the world a bit more and save that ignorant crap for your own pathetic little world. The tongue-in-cheek excuse won't fly for this one Andrew. You have to at least know something about what you're talking about in order to use it, which you obviously don't. Why the editors of The Inquirer continue to post your consistently bad articles boggles the mind.

Subject: Vista Cool'n'Quiet

There is something that anyone looking at CPU speed in Cool'n'Quiet needs to know: If you run anything on the 64bit OS that is 32bit, it will fire up the WOW64 which will in turn peg the cpu speed.

The exact same thing will happen to the previous XP 32 bit OS, when you ran a 16bit app.

It's the translator program that does it.

That being said, it is possible for a given cpu to not have cool'n'quiet enabled, as well as bios not supporting it (though Microsoft supposedly took it over and now controls it, much to the dismay of the AMD engineers who protested vehemently to no avail.)

Subject: Winnpeg Friendly! Of course!

Just so you are aware, Manitoba liscence plates read "Freindly Manitoba" above thier ID numbers. there is a reason for this. -40c winter nights means sometimes you gotta rely on your neighbours...

I don't see how British Airways Actions have anything to do with the problem occurance mentioned here. Just so happens they diverted to Winnipeg...but that was the choice of the British Airways crew, and noone else. The Chap was plastered on thier plane, after all.

As far as I'm concerned, your site here owes an apology to all winnipeg Natives for putting thier town in such a bad light...because I know that Winnipeg is nowhere as bad as you seem to make it out. I'd also like to know where the seal blood is...because i don't think even the zoo has seals in an exhibit, and they are definately not native to this part of the country. You've got a beter chance at finding a Garter Snake:

I was born in Canada to British parents and his comments about Winnipeg and Canada in general is offensive and not appreciated or welcomed. Canadians on the whole do not spit on the British. In fact we consider the English as family. While he is entitled to his opinion I believe an apology is in order. Regards: Leslie Martin, Ottawa

Subject: Seagate's encrypted hard drive

Oh, I think it is a given that Seagate "discussed" this with the American government before introducing the technology; 1. There are places in the world where the U.S. government does not want the local government to get ahold of sensitive cryptographic technology, and 2. The government will make damn sure IT has a way to read the disks, no matter what.

Even if it uses PKI or AES or any of the other common schemes, the National Security Agency (NSA) has more than enough demonstrated ability to crack it in almost real-time.

Subject: Everywhere Girl Sighting

Hi, Mike!

First off - I want to say that I'm a big fan of the Inquirer; thanks for the relentless good work and hearty cynicism.

Today I was given pause when I learned that the Everywhere Girl has seeped into the very textbooks with which we educate our University students. I say "educate" and "students" with some modicum of irony, since I'm an American. Anyway, take a look on the right hand side of Prentice Hall's front page:

http://vig.prenhall.com/

And there she is - apparently either rapt with the glories of the learning process, or in the midst of realizing she's about to be eaten by a puma. Either way, thanks, Prentice Hall Publishing.

As always, keep up the good work.

Cheers,

Subject: Armenian Holocoust

You bloomin ignorant dilbert!!! What do you know about Armeninan holocoust??? There is no armeninan holocoust!!

It is the lies of people like you who hate Turks for its Ottoman past! In my hometown in Turkey hundreds were killed by armenian gangs, women and young girls raped, villages burnt!!! I think you have no idea of these attrocities commited by Armenians!!!

No wonder why present Armenians, and its allies like you, do not want an inquiry into what had happened, carried by historians! They know that their lies will come out and they will not be able to claim compensation from us if we accept their version! We will never bow down to our enemies!!!

Ive been following this site for more than 3 years but it stops now! I'll warn my fellow Turks about you!

It is obvious you have little knowledge of Turkey, history, and have a lot of hate towards Turkish people.

Please stick to the tech news and leave your ignorant and offensive comments to yourself. This article was completely wrong. Bring your evidence if you are truthful.

Subject: Seagate Drive & Paedophiles 12 Mar 07

The headline is alarming. What is it's intent? Seagate has produced a secure hardrive that can be used to protect DRM & the user's data. The private data that's stored cannot be stolen. This article implies that Seagate it catering to paedophiles when it's actually providing a device to secure data on laptops that are stolen or lost. Is the author of this little piece just playing Devil's Advocate or is he/she an anti DRM activist? It's a good idea and a badly needed one in light of all the stolen laptops lately.

Thanks,
Lee

Subject: ...for paedophiles and spooks

That seagate drive is good news for all of us, and hopefully many other brands will take not and do likewise.

I know you're being cheeky, and I enjoy that...

I just want to make the point that encryption for privacy is a very very good idea and I think that most inq readers will agree that more of it available (and easier and faster) is better.

Now if seagate drives would stop shuffling off their mortal coil and taking my goddamned data with them....

perhaps the Labour party have not promoted the fact as well as they could, but great progress is already being made to introduce open source solutions for British government. The very thought that a conservative politician might notice such aspirations, jump on it, then claim it for his own...

For Andrew Thomas and the Inq Editors:

Normally I would be civil. Your article's content IMHO frees me from that constraint.

British Airways cannot handle it's passengers and you use that to abuse Canada? Wibble you, Andrew, and wibble the Inq. You are an ignorant sanctimonious sack of wibble , and your editors are your equal for publishing the article. I suggest you read some history other than UKUS propaganda.

You just lost a faithful reader and evangelist. In future I suggest that you need to publish more fan pieces about Toady Blair and his Dead Brown People - it will more accurately reflect your myopia.

Subject: Canada. Just don't go there?

Once again AT has succeeded in p*ssing off a large group of people, in this case and entire country.

First he says "hick town in possibly the third-worldishest first world country on the planet." Winnipeg is a major city, not a hick town, and then to call Canada third-worldish? I did a quick Google search on standard of living and this is what I found:

1. Norway
2. Sweden
3. Canada
4. Belgium
5. Australia
6. United States
7. Iceland
8. Netherlands
9. Japan
10. Finland

Now this is from 2003-2004 and look who's number 3? Where's the UK? Hmmm....

Then "snowy wasteland spattered with the blood of dead baby seals". Maybe he should get his facts straight before he spouts off about something he obviously has no clue about.

Then he goes on to call Canadian beer "dreadful"! Canadians brew some of the best beer in the world and we take it very seriously! And it's cold!

Then he slams maple syrup?!?!? Huh... 'nuf said.

Yes, the PM speaks French 'cuz it's an official language!

As for the value of the fines, as of today 17000CAD is 7,508.05GPB, not quite 75p.

With all this being said, AT please stay in the UK 'cuz I don't think you'd be welcome here!

YT

P.S. Inq, keep up the good work.

Subject: Man, I'm from Winnipeg

Yeah, I'm from Winnipeg, so what? You think it's a hick town? At least I'm not from Britain, the land of the slack jawed, people with annoying accents and the worst teeth on that side of the world.

Subject: AMD a "Third World Knock off"?

Posting articles such as this [http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=38119] would be laughable if it wasn't defamatory. If AMD doesn't sue the Inquirer for libel consider yourself lucky.

Despite the fact that Gibbons cites his source [Adequacy.org], the information is apocryphal at best.

The last time I checked AMD was an American company, with it's head office is Sunnyvale, California. Hyperbole aside, since when has the USA become a "Third-World" nation by any stretch of the imagination?

It appears that some revisionist has distorted history. Yes, a couple of years ago there were counterfeit (Knock-off) AMD's found in Taiwan. Yes, they were inferior to the genuine AMD CPU's they were being passed off as. But NO, they were not AMD products.

Regardless, any logic that ties knock-off products with hackers is spurious! It's more reasonable to assume that most of the people purchasing those knock-off 'AMD' processors weren't even aware of it, or simply wanted to save money.

The manner in which you reported that story lowers the Inquirer's credibility. How can I continue to refer my friends and colleagues to your website for news and facts when you post this sort of tripe?

It begs the question: Is the Inquirer receiving any remuneration from Intel in any form whatsoever for this nonsense?

Subject: Microsoft's re-invention of the jpeg

Well the article's findings are quite impressive eh? :

"Data Compression Basics - Part 2"

http://digitalproducer.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=109739-3

Microsoft's JPEG-2000 is way way better as the ordinary JPEG format. Knowing how Microsoft works (You know how, and I know how they work) they must have found some highly intelligent coder..

It might be interesting as a background to read the following wikipage about a Dutch guy called Jan Sloot :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Sloot

"Romke Jan Bernhard Sloot (died 1999) was a Dutch electronics technician, who claimed to have developed a revolutionary data compression technique, the Sloot Digital Coding System, which could compress a complete movie down to 8 kilobytes of data— this is orders of magnitude greater compression than the best currently available technology.

Despite the seeming impossibility of such a technique there were investors that saw potential. However, Sloot died of a heart attack one day before an attractive deal was signed with Roel Pieper, former CTO and board member of Philips. Pieper first heard about this "invention" when he was still on Philips' payroll, and it is said that he left Philips because he believed he could invest in a lucrative deal."

They are even gonna make a movie about the story behind Jan Sloot, "De Bron Code", "The Source Code".

Well the story-line ain't that hard to guess. Roel Pieper snatched the algorithm for Mister Sloot, after he conveniently dropped dead, and sold the goodies to ehhh Microsoft?

Hey dudes, you better watch yar back. Some nasty truths are gonna be revealed, pretty soon.

Cheers,
Robert

I think the Bugatti video was very well made. Thanks for that link. I'll take a wait and see attitude towards the new vole photo format. BTW, I think Vista's biggest problem is going to be competing against Windows XP, which does what we need it to do and is familiar to all of us.

Subject: seagate-maxtor

Just a comment:

a certain reader mentioned that maxtor hdd-s have failed on him in a raid config, 3 times, while seagate hdd-s never.

well, from my own experience, in an intel server, raid5 config, maxtor hdd-s would frequently "fail", but in reality, after unplugging them and plugging them back in, they would miraculosely resurect back to life, while data would be lost. after a little research into intel's compatibility chart, i decided to use seagate and no more fake failures anymore. The thing that annoyed me, is that i could not find any information on the web, pertainting to: "maxtor hdd-s are not ment for raid-s cos they suck big time" or "maxtor is a scam, they only sell defective/incomplete/mal-functioning products, that don't respect industry standards"

Claudiu_S

PS: due to maxtor i lost a client who lost trust in me, after too many hdd raid failures and data loss. by the time i suggested Seagate, it was too late, but the server started to work just fine.

Subject: Third World AMD makes 'knock off American processors'

Come on Inquirer newsdesk, this has to be a spoof article that you link to. When viewing point 10 of the link on how to work out if you child is turning into a computer hackers, it states that: -

"In extreme cases, over-exposure to computer radiation can cause schizophrenia, meningitis and psychological diseases"

I mean, even my non-techie wife would realise that thats bull$hit! Ha Ha Ha, catching a viral infection from a PC...

Saying that, I havnt chuckled out loud all day until I read the article, and I'll email it to all my mates so they can have a chuckle too.

Dear INQ,
