Portal for Xbox 360 offers nothing new

Seriously... nothing
Tuesday, 22 July 2008, 12:38

DESPITE GETTING A dedicated, stand-alone release of hit PC shooter Portal, Xbox 360 owners aren't actually going to be getting any extra content than that available for free on the PC.

Following the massive critical success of the game, the surprise hit of Valve's Orange Box package from last year, a stand-alone release was always on the cards. PC gamers have been enjoying add-on maps, release free by Valve, since earlier this year.

But with the Xbox 360 release (subtitled Portal: Still Alive) PC gamers were starting to get angsty that the non-believers on the Vole's console were going to be getting more content than was available on the game's original platform, thus sparking that particular kind of PC fanboy mutiny all too familiar to us.

But in a new interview, Valve's Doug Lombardi explains that the Xbox 360 version will have no new levels, no new storyline elements, no new encounters with the popular GlaDOS character, and no new game modes.

Wow, way to sell us on the game, Doug.

Instead, the disc will package up all the free content available on the PC for handy convenience and attempt to rack up big bucks for very little effort.

Great for keeping your PC fanbase onside, not so great for actually selling games on your new platform.

But then, with the cost of PC to Xbox transition so minimal these days, it's all gravy, right?

@Wily Ferret:

Did you actually read the linked article?

Are your reading and comprehension skills really that poor?

1. 'Portal: Still Alive' is a download through XBox Live Arcade
2. It has all the original game levels as per the version of the game included with the Orange Box
3. It has additional levels taken from the Portal 'Flash' game available elswhere on the interweb. These levels have been made 3D and have been available FoC for the PC for some time. These levels are not based around the original storyline as they were conceived as an homage to the greatness and originality of the initial release.

So, if you have and Xbox 360 but do not have the original Portal from the Orange Box, this is a good way to get it (along with some new levels).

If you do already have Portal on the Xbox 360 and would like some new levels while you wait for the next full release, this download also ticks the boxes.

Oh, and I'm not sure I'd classify it as a 'shooter'.

Additionally, the publisher would be Valve rather than Microsoft so to leap on the std. 'M$ rips customers' blah blah bullshit is as tedious as it is factually incorrect.

*sigh*

Other than that, what a fantastic article!

A Blessing

At very least. Xbox owners who refuse to buy a pc for gaming should be grateful they even get the chance to play portal on the 360.

I for one think that fps should be on PC rather than a console controller.

and if they do have a gaming pc.. why would you bother with the 360 edition?

err

azu, the orange box has been out for a while for 360...with Portal. what are you on about?

so anyone who bought the orange box for 360 already HAS PORTAL. and has no reason to buy the DLC. it's for people who didn't bother to buy orange box for 360 BECAUSE MAYBE THEY ALREADY PLAYED IT ON THE SUPERIOR PLATFORM, A GODDAMN PC.

You got that right

@ Azu, I couldn't agree more! I have both PC and 360 but I find the PC best for (most) types of games, I wish there was a way to stop piracy so that the PC market keeps some of the better exclusives that seem to be going to the consoles as well now. Too many idiots out there copying stuff now.

Specialist

If the inq is going to comment on game releases .. can we please have someone that has even an inkling of what they are talking about ..

This lack of factual accuracy is really becoming a blight on this publication.

Not everyone may have bought the Orange Box - or experienced portal . So an XBLA download for portal makes sense . The seperate parts of the Orange box have been available both at retail and on Steam for some time.
