Woman 'borrowed' from boss

To get $10 million from Nigeria
Wed Oct 22 2008, 10:21

A US WOMAN was so convinced that a Nigerian internet scam was genuine she stole cash from her employer to send advance payments in order to get a promised $10 million.

Jalaine Noella Holtan, 53, worked for Casey's General Store. She took between $10,000 and $15,000 in cash which was supposed to be deposited in the bank.

When coppers investigated, Holtan said that she had been involved in investments for several years. Then she got an e-mail in early July from an attorney named Morgan Smith, who said she was to receive $10 million from investments she had made in diamonds and oil in Nigeria.

The email promised that Nigeran diplomats were in Rochester in June with the money, but they needed a 'certificate' to transfer the money to her. The diplomats needed her to front the money to them to pay for the paperwork.

Since she didn’t have the money, the diplomats returned to Nigeria and put her in touch with Smith.

Smith was supposed to arrive in Rochester on July 9. She said she waited for him at the airport until 10 pm, but he never showed up.

Instead she got a message from Smith in which he said he needed $2,500 from her in order to get to Rochester with the $10 million, but she didn't have it for him.

Apparently Holtan had sent over $12,507 to the scammers since July 7 and most of the money had come by 'borrowing' it from her employer. Holtan said she took took the cash with the intention of repaying the money upon receipt of her $10 million, but apparently she never smelled a rat. µ

WHY??

Why are people so moronic that they believe this crap?

Any sensible person should realize straight away that it's a scam, not to mention there are warnings all over TV etc telling them

I cannot comprehend the stupidity...

presidentially stupid!

That level of stupidity should be a felony. Maybe she is one of the president's advisors.

Gun for food or food for gun!

Not surprised,

Why is it also that the more food sent there we see more children with REAL guns?

Why is it also that the more violent games that are released we see more children with REAL guns, here?

I guess the blindfold is preferred... before any execution!

sounds fishy

I doubt she's that stupid. She was probably stealing money for a long time and when she got caught, she probably thought stupidity would set her free. They does mention she had "good" intentions of repaying the $$ like that's not really theft just borrowing it.
Ahh who am I kidding she's dumb alright that is a dumb plan either way.

That's Bogus!

Yah that's a bogus story, I red it on Snopes & it's an urben myth. Yo guys don't check your sources or something?
The truth is, there isn't a single person in the world dumb enough to fall for that idiotic line.

On the other hand, Heaven's Gate club makes a lot of sense. You know the Earth just past threw Halley's Comet dust like yesterday, you know. Its called shooting stars or something. You gotta check it out. When you cut off your weiner it stings a little but then it feels a lot better after that. I'm a real good web pogrammer.

Palin for Dollars...

Hope this doesn't turn out to be a lost twin sister of Sarah Palin that was switched at birth. If she became Vice President, as trusting, foolish and unethical as she is - the US could have suffered from her gullibility and poor judgement - placing us in a world of financial hurt...uh nevermind looks like the really smart people found something even better than Nigeria to fall for.

LMAO

This is why these scams are still around, because dumb asses still give money. I need to start my own scam, since they seem to work.

LOL

Deport her to Nigeria

She should be deported to Nigeria, where she can live out her days. Honestly, how stupid can people be? Even before people were informed that these were scams, they should know *anyway*. These must be the same stupid folk who bought into these sub-prime morgages.

Never trust Africa

Anytime you see an e-mail from an African country, believe it to be a scam right away. The largest money scam comes from Africa. And it always reads like this. Send us a few grand for your millions.

Why would anyone even begin to believe this has any legitimacy is beyond me. What kind of sense can it make to give money to get money. Just tell these fools, take it out of my 10 mil, and we're even.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
