THE CHAIRMAN OF Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) is facing sanctions for investing in the chip business in China.

According to the Economic News of Taiwan, Richard Zhang will be investigated for helping the semiconductor industry on the mainland to grow.

The paper said Zhang is still a Taiwanese citizen, and could face heavy fines for his involvement in building the company up.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs wants to get its governmental mitts on Zhang, and has invited him to return to the island so they can find out whether he was a Taiwanese citizen at the time of the investments.
