ATI 4830 completes the trio

Filling in performance gaps
Thursday, 23 October 2008, 09:39

ATI IS LAUNCHING another 48xx series card, the low end 4830, and it nicely fills the gap between the 4670 and the 4850. This one is positioned right against the Nvidia 9800GT, and should pummel it rather silly for the price.

Sapphire HD4830

The raw specs are about 75 per cent of a 4850, it starts out with 640 shaders versus the 800 of its bigger brethren, but has the same 512M of GDDR3. The core clock is down less than 10 per cent, 575MHz vs 625, and there are 32 texture units, eight less than the 4850. Memory clock is also down 100 to 900MHz.

If you are thinking that this is a lower end card than the 4850, you are right, it is also less expensive. There is a gap in the ATI lineup from the $80 (MSRP) 4670 to the barely sub-$150 4850s, and the $129 (MSRP) 4830 fills that nicely. Right now, the boards are etailing for between $115 and $129, so the spread should be just about right.

The only other spec of note is that it is a 110W TDP board, same as the 4850. If you stop and think about it, given the downlocking, it should be way way below that number in practice. Other than that, you are left with about 3/4 the performance of the 4850 for about 3/4 the price, not a bad thing at all. µ

If...

If we assume all of these changes are weighted evenly, we should see the 4830 with about 85.5% of the performance of the 4850 - mathematically speaking...

A simplification maybe, but it should be around that area... Which will be nice.

110W TDP

That's a very disappointing number. But I guess after you pass the 75W mark for PCIe, lower wattage isn't as big a selling point.

Tigerdirect.com doesn't have it yet, but Newegg does

I'll was looking at the 4670, but the 4830 gets around 10 frames per second higher FPS. What it comes down to for me is the money. Will decide in a few days.

Nice card shame about the power draw

No Charlie go look at some reviews, it doesnt pummell the 9800GT, it's noticably faster in some games and noticably slower some other games on most reviews. It's more expensive than a 9800GT by roughly 20% & draws between 20-30% more power depending on load so in the performance per watt stakes (something I'm sure you've banged on about recently) its a poor show. It's still a good card but not many reviews say its a clear winner over a 9800GT in fact most say it's a toss up between them and to go with the name you prefer. Also it's a pitty that you feel you absolutely MUST without fail introduce some venom towards nVidia in every article you write these days.

hd4750

One could use a hd4750, to fill the gap between hd4670 and hd4830.

Let it be 80w-90w tdp

Nice way to fill the gap.

Check out the conclusion here. http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3437&p=11

Looks to me like the performances of the cards match the price curve. No bashing going on. $/fps wise they're probably equal. fps/watt not so much, but it's not enough to bother.

Low profile

Nice addition to the ATI crowd :) After having a 7800 GTX die (same way as the 8xxx series btw, maybe The INQ should check to see if this series is also affected??? hmmm???) I'm back on the ATI wagon.

Now all I want is for someone to release a 4670 or 4650 low profile so I can whack two of them into a tiny case on a DFI LP JR 790GX-M2RS and have a nice little LAN Party machine! Come on! Give me low profile cards!!!

This is a winner

I don't know where you .Eric, got your numbers from...but be aware of those N-vidia paid out sites...like:
bjorn3d,hexus,tweaktwon,................
The 4830 does beat the 9800gt in every single game and it even surpasses the 9800gtx in few games.

A proud owner of a complete DAAMIT PC.
