People want their tellies to wibble on the web

Wi-fi to connect hi-fi to sci-fi
Wed Jul 11 2007, 16:03
A SURVEY from Isuppli claimed two thirds of people want their TVs to connect to the net. And that means a bonanza for devices that satisfy this lust.

Shipments of kit that help this to come about mean a rapid rise in products worldwide to 732.8 million units by 2011 - three times the number sold in 2006.

The products under this Isuppli umbrella include DVD recorders, digital TVs, digital video recorders, digital media adaptors, set top boxes and video game consoles, said Isuppli.

The most common interface for the products in 2011 will be wi-fi, with Cat 5, power lines and co-axial cable following the wireless lead.

Isupplie reckons that at the end of last year there were 76 million home LANs installed, but that's only three per cent of the potential market.

TV vendors are including IP connectivity in their boxes but the growth in the market, short term, will be North America, Europe, and Japan first of all. ยต
