Apple considers buying Universal Music

Intel still in running for Warner Chappell?
Friday, 11 April 2003, 12:06
JUST A FEW days after we reported that Intel was in the running to snap up AWOL Time Warner CNN's music business, a report has appeared reckoning that Steve Jobs' Apple is considering buying Universal Music.

The report, in the Los Angeles Times today, claims that Apple is talking to Vivendi to snap up Universal Music for as much as $6 billion.

That would put Jobs in pole position as a key player in the music industry. The paper said that Apple has been talking to Vivendi for some months, with Vivendi eager to liberate cash from the sale.

And that means the Intel story is not as far fetched as first appears. A separate report in the Wall Street Journal this morning claims that AOL won't offer shares in Time Warner Cable until September.

It wants to sell off Warner Chappell Music, the newspaper said, and that will liberate over $1 billion for the group. This report claims that potential buyers include David Geffen, a Dreamworks partner. ยต
