Innovation is a lot like love, everyone knows when it happens, but nobody really knows what it is - Dean 'Mr Segway' Kamen
According to the bloke who built most of the server products in Vole's Backoffice, Tom Evslin, Bill Gates manages in a dominating way.
Writing in his bog, Evslin said that when he worked for Vole between 1992-1994 surviving a presentation to Gates was a key success skill in the company.
"You're in there presenting your product plan to billg, steveb, and mikemap. Billg typically has his eyes closed and he's rocking back and forth. He could be asleep; he could be thinking about something else; he could be listening intently to everything you're saying.
"The trouble is all are possible and you don't know which. Obviously, you have to present as if he were listening intently even though you know he isn't looking at the PowerPoint slides you spent so much time on," wrote Evslin.
At some point in the presentation, Gates would open his eyes and say "that's the dumbest f****** idea I've heard since I've been at Microsoft" and look like he meant it.
Evslin said that since you know he is going to say it, it is not a good idea to be fazed by this.
We imagine you should not retort: "What? Dumber than that f****** paperclip your missus came up with?"
Instead you should ask him assertively as you can he has a problem with and go from there. You should never give in if you are right. In Vole, you can be blamed just as much for doing the wrong thing because Gates told you to as you will be if you did it all on your own.
If you win, Gates will just look at you coldly and tell you to go on.
Evslin revealed that everyone refers to people by their email addresses. This made it possible to create hybrid people who share the same address for information purposes.
"Boop stood for billg plus the office of the president (real presidents didn't last very long there). The oop consisted of steveb (Steve Ballmer) and mikemap. Major decisions were sometimes made by the boop." ยต
