Not all ATI customers treated equally, readers complain

Free downloads for new lamps, pay now if you've an older one
Friday, 19 September 2003, 11:15
READERS OF THE INQUIRER are up in arms after the firm posted a message saying that owners of older ATI products will have to pay for a Media Center upgrade while it's free of charge to owners of newer lamps.

A message on the ATI software download page, which you can find here, warns that owners of older ATI products running MMC 7.7.0.1 or before, will have to stump up cash for an installation CD, rather than download the upgrade for nothing.

The CD costs $10 plus shipping and handling, according to the ATI web site.

One reader told the INQ: " All customers are the equal but some customers are more equal. I have been an ATI enthusiast for quite a while now but this is absolutely disapointing. Am I supposed to pay for an upgrade of a product I paid for that is actually freely distributed to more recent customers?"

The answer, it appears, is "yes". ยต
