BBC screwed up on wi-fi report

Board decides it was all a little je ne sais quois
Sun Dec 02 2007, 17:08

A PANORAMA programme the BBC broadcast last May over egged the cake about wi-fi being a danger to schools and kids.

The BBC's editorial complaints unit said that the Panorama programme gave a misleading impression of the state of scientific opinion.

It also gave the impression that professor Michael Repacholi's independence was in question.

This, said the editorial complaints unit, "reinforced the misleading impression, and was unfair to professor Repacholi. The BBC will flag up its findings on the Panorama web site. µ

There's There's Radiaton and Radiation..

The amount of damage potential from radiation is related not just to its power but also the frequency. At the top end we've got ionizing radiation, the stuff that knocks molecules around, causes cancers and stuff. But to get there from WiFi you've got to tune through other common high intensity radiation sources such as heaters, light fixtures and, of course, the sun.

Panorama should be ashamed of itself, peddling junk science like this. The only reason why 2.4GHz has any affect on us at all is that its one of two frequencies that are absorbed by water. Its why its used by microwave ovens -- and its also why we've been so generously allowed to use it for our unlicensed communications (which include cordless phones, R/C models and all sorts of other junk). Maybe instead of going tabloid they should be making the case for freeing up some more spectrum for us.

Microwaves

"You run a microwave near a wifi laptop and you will probly lose your connection as test/proof for this idea."

Not unless you break open the Microwave so that works with the door open - frying yourself in the bargin!

Microwaves

Yeah but that just proves a microwave puts out more energy than Wi-Fi.

According to the custom firmware on my wireless router, my laptop is currently putting out -35dBm which converts to just under 1.0µW or 0.000001W of energy. Considering most microwaves are 800W it's not exactly a lot of heat is it?

WIFI is Microwave energy

WIFI IS Microwave Energy same but lower dose so it is somewhat correct.

Pathetic

How pathetic are the Panorama team for hiding their apology away on their website? How many of their luddite, technophobe viewers will see that now that they've thrown out their wireless routers? No doubt they'd be too busy wrapping tinfoil around their heads to keep any errant wifi signals away to notice anyway.

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
