Dell set to sell at Best Buy

Direct model does dance of the dying duck
Fri Dec 07 2007, 10:04

TIN MAN Michael Dell has decided to start flogging his gear at Best Buy as his company's direct sales model continues to be dumped.

According to AP, Best Buy will get its first batch of Dell computers in January. It will flog Dell XPS and Inspiron notebook and desktop computers at more than 900 stores.

Dell already sells modestly priced PCs in about 3,000 Wal-Mart stores and targets small-business owners with sales at 1,400 Staples.

Dell built its business around the idea of flogging PCs to customers over the phone or Internet, however the public has been losing interest in the idea.

The strokers of beards and philosophists in the IT industry's analyst community have all come to the conclusion that punters want to play with PCs before they buy them.

This has lead to Dell lose ground to HP in the PC sales market, they say. µ

Maybe just bad PCs

Dell sells allot of mediocre PCs to small and medium size businesses. Hordes bought the pre-rigged sets thinking they made a killer deal with Dell.

They (customers en masse) are just now catching on to that fact. Fast procs with sub performing parts, makes a Dell.

Play before buy

I do not think that Dell buyers have dumped the Dell online selling model.
The possibility to confiugure online your PC is and will be a great value for most users.

However the market is quickly shifting from desktops to notebooks and, for many people, a notebook is something between a PC and a Gadget, so aesthetic and design does matter. In this case people want to have a direct look at the product.

Also Dell products are not properly popular for their design, but it seems that recent models have improved.

A better presentation of the product in the Dell webside would also help (like Alienware site).

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
