VIRGIN MEDIA has come top of a survey rating broadband Internet providers on how honest they are about the speeds provided.
Point Topic's report on this issue said that Virgin Media shows good improvement in its promises versus its delivery as, "Consumers still regard speed as a key benchmark of their ISP experience."
Sky Broadband is the only one out of Tiscali, Virgin Media and BT which has revealed a drop, Point Topic explains that, “The damage to Sky seems to be mostly in its 8Mb and 16Mb packages, where take-up has increased but reported delivery speeds have decreased in proportion”.
This research also shows that customers with packages offering speeds of up
to 16Mb believe that they are getting closer to the advertised
speed.
Point Topic said further that, “Indications from responses are that cable experience is moving closer to the advertised speed while the high speed DSL experience, as expected, tails off as the limits of the technology approach."
It certainly seems now that providers are taking promises seriously and not offering impossible speeds which could never conceivably be reached.
Michael Phillips of BroadbandChoices.co.uk reckons that, “Despite the ‘up to’ clause in broadband advertising, many consumers feel cheated when they receive significantly lower than their advertised speed, so it’s great to see that ISPs are working hard to improve their customers’ experience."
Mr Phillips suggests you contact your service provider if you're experiencing "snail-paced" broadband, as there is no reason why people should put up with slower than advertised broadband speeds. µ

well i suppose its a step in the right direction ...an admission of sorts that your really bad at providing bandwidth!! ..use to be great service 8 years ago they were the first people to offer free internet on dial up then they sold me a 150k line ping times of 16 - 20ms around the country faultless!!! then everyone else joined the internet.. :(
... try doing the speed test after you've downloaded a few gigs of data and VM have started throttling your connection. Then see how honest their bandwidth promises are.

thatll explain why virgin is blowin its trumpet about net speedtests being inaccurate and want more accurate testing, namely SamKnows hardware, where virgin just so happens to do well O_o se here :- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7669713.stm

hmmmmmmm, what a coincidence eh ?? O_O
yeah - up until they cap your ass for downloading more than 3Gb per day.......
