Ajax developers ignore Safari

Iphone applications go in direct
Wednesday, 26 September 2007, 15:08

THERE IS a bit of a brouhaha, er, brewing over how third party applications should run over the Iphone.

While Apple wants people to write Ajax software to run on its pointless Safari browser, developers are writing their applications directly into the machine itself.

According to Network World, software developer Dylan Schiemann said that there are limitations on how applications can run on Safari, and there is a vibrant community of developers writing apps to install directly on Iphone.

Schiemann has got 40 applications running on his Iphone and uses the Dojo Foundation's open source Dojo Toolkit for writing iPhone applications.

While Apple might want people to write the applications to run on its mobile Safari the toolkits can't overcome all the limitations.

Web-based apps can't react to the iPhone's signature feature, which is the ability of a person to use finger-touch commands, such as the "pinch" to zoom in on a Web page.

Doesn't Matter?

If you think the top selling consumer electronic right now is irrelevant; you really need to get out of the cave.

I can't stand a watered-down version of the web, and that's what people still get with the iPhone.

What article were you reading?

Where did the author say the Iphone was irrelevant? He referred to Safari as pointless, and in the context of this article it is. It's a watered-down, awful web browser that doesn't give full access to the phone.
