LITTLE-KNOWN BASHER OF SILICON, Intel has come up with an eight core box guaranteed to have gamers reaching for the Kleenex.
The Intel Dual Socket Extreme Desktop Platform formerly known as Skulltrail, supports two Intel quad core processors along with multi-card graphics.
"When it comes to delivering innovation to the ultimate enthusiast, our new 8-core desktop platform is a winner," says Jeff McCrea, senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Digital Home Group. "The ground-breaking Intel Desktop Board D5400XS enables the flexibility to pair a variety of quad graphics solutions with two of our fastest desktop processors. The result is stunning PC performance."
The Intel D5400XS mobo, when paired with two Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 processors, enables gamers to use either Nvidia SLI or ATI Crossfire cards. Each Intel Core 2 Extreme processor QX9775 has 12MB of L2 cache, a 1600 MHz system bus and four cores running at 3.2 GHz.
Chipzilla has also removed overclocking protection enabling hardcore gamers to claim ever more unfeasible bragging rights.
"This dual processor platform is the fastest desktop PC we've ever tested in our labs, reaching a score of 6481 on 3DMark06 CPU and 20,160 on Cinebench 10 even while running at the standard 3.20 GHz frequency," says Shervin Kheradpir, director of Intel performance benchmarking.
The Core 2 Extreme QX9775 is available now at $1,499. Estimated street pricing for the D5400XS mobo is $649.
Intel says several PC manufacturers plan to offer systems based on the mobo including Armari, Boxx Tech, Digital Storm, Falcon Northwest, Maingear, Puget Systems, Scan, Velocity Micro, Vigor Gaming, Voodoo and @Xi Computers.
Intel's test configuration for the benchmarks involved two Core2 Extreme QX9775s on a D5400XS board, 2x2GB Dual Channel Micron FBDIMM DDR2-800 5-5-5-15 and three ATI Radeon HD 3870 Graphics Cards in Crossfire Mode under Vista Ultimate 32bit.

maybe this will finally allow me to type at 900 trillion words per minute. no more pesky singular quad-core word processing lag -- a true delight for a pragmatist such as myself. now if they'd only create a keyboard that doesn't melt everytime i write a letter.
Does anyone remember exactly when enthusiast started meaning sucker with a fat wallet? was it after the nforce2 chipsets became passé?
if you have 5 to 10 THOUSAND bucks to spend on "bigger penis" competitions, you might as well spend ONE TO TWO thousands on a computer you (might) need for gaming, another one or two for a proper headshrink therapy, and give the rest away to some proper charity; or just save it, fffffs...

in one year it will lose 75% or more of its retail value, and it will take the games roughly one year to take advantage of it. it's not overkill, it's WASTE.
so if we call ati/amd daamit, we should call this pisedd?
Imagine what it can do without Vista!
This is some good schtuff!

AMD had better get a move on. Does anyone really expect AMD to produce something in the parking lot of the stadium of the team that plays in this league that can compete.
