Peter Gabriel's servers nicked
TECH-SAVVY popular beat artist Peter Gabriel has had his Web empire switched off for days after someone took a sledgehammer to his web host's security and walked off with his servers.
According to a post on what is left of the site this morning the Real World, Peter Gabriel and WOMAD web services are currently off-line. Tea leafs apparently raided the ISP's data centre on Sunday night and made off with the gear.
As of this morning, Gabriel's company had managed to get its online store working which means that buying tickets for WOMAD'S Charlton Park concert and CDs from Real World Records are now possible. If you want to find out how Gabriel is recovering from his skiing accident then you are out of luck.
Gabriel was one of the few artists who rushed to embrace Internet and computer technology.
Still he must be wondering how on earth someone can steal servers from an ISP. µ

doesn't mean you get get service on the backend. For a very brief time, I worked at a webhost that charged really high fees and hourly costs for custom work that was 6x what it paid an employee to do the work.

The "servers" were economy desktops sitting on a table, that occupied leased room in a public office (old factory). This ofice area was locked (it was the room we all worked in) but maintenance and the cleaning people had a key to the place and would enter the area after hours.

So if you're serious about your setup, physically see it, because price is irrelevant.
