The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits - Albert Einstein
SEEING AS WII FIT is selling by the bucket-load around the World, Activision is planning on releasing balance-boards for the entire roster of consoles, and the PC, according to Kotaku.
Xbox 360
Another week brings another storage-size-related rumour for the 360.
Trustedreviews.com
fuels the fire with whisperings of a 60GB based 360 coming to shelves near you,
after a launch at E3.
Gamesradar.com tries to argue the need for Xbox Live at a cost, making good reading. We're still wondering how long Microsoft can charge for the serivce considering both the Wii and PS3 operate similar services for free.
Maybe it's to subsidise the cost of copying the Nintendo's Wii avatars.
PS3/PSP
The Playstation 3 has dominated Japanese hardware sales in the past week ending
June 15th, due to the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 and selling 75,311 units
according to figures from Media Create, via
Gamesindustry.biz.
The PSP followed up the rear, with 64,675 consoles sold.
Oddly, Gamesindustry.biz also reports that UK sales of the PS3 were only up 7 per cent up on launch of MGS4, which is probably much less than Sony had hoped for.
Version 4.00 of the PSP's firmware has now been released, and contains one major additional feature - a new Google search engine button to its XMB interface.
The PS3 also had a firmware update - up to version 2.36, though this has the less exciting update reason of "improving system stability when playing select Playstation format software titles."
In other PS3 firmware news - Sony has confirmed that version 2.40 will bring an in-game XMB and Trophy system, as previously described in the INQ's console round-up.
Wii/DS
Less than five days after Nintendo released a new firmware update (known as Wii
menu update 3.3) that fixed the original 'Twilight Hack' that allowed homebrew
on the Wii, hackers have
successfully
re-hacked the Wii.
Excitingly for Nintendo fans, Marc Franklin, director of public relations at Nintendo, told Gamepro "…we will be announcing several new titles that core gamers will be interested in around the time of E3."
If you're more NES-focused than Wii or DS, Wired has a useful article on how to fix any broken consoles you may have. µ
In all honesty the hacked wii is a good thing. If i were to build a console, which from a business point of view i would like to do, i would make it hackable. Firstly the liberalisation of writing programs (games) can produce good software for the platform. Which will shift you more units ok hardware will cost more as it is not subsidised by licensing games however people are not stuid, reverse engineers are godly creatures in my opinion and they cater to what i would call a free market. Nintendo are currently limiting themselves and their partners, as are all console manufactures by restricting the software that will run on their platform. Proof of this well come on MICROSOFT!
