Torrentspy shuts out US users

"User privacy concerns"
Tuesday, 28 August 2007, 08:46
US USERS of TorrentSpy are being put out into the cold.

The outfit, which is currently being sued by the US movie industry, claimed that the move is nothing to do with its legal woes.

In a statement, the outfit said that TorrentSpy's decision to stop accepting US visitors was not compelled by any court. "It arises out of an uncertain legal climate in the United States regarding user privacy and the apparent tension between US and European Union Internet privacy laws."

According to ZD Net, the company's servers are located in the Netherlands and the site will remain accessible to users outside of the United States.

Part of the reason might be that the company is the recent ruling by a US judge that the company hand over data on the server's memory to the MPAA. This will give the MPAA the IP addresses of every user at the site and enable the outfit to sue them.

While this is apparently legal in the land of the free it is not in the EU which has strict privacy laws and the movie industry does not run the government or courts.
