UMC subsidiary's SIS' subsidiary buys Trident subsidiary

More strings to the UMC bow
Thu Jun 12 2003, 15:42
A SIS SUBSIDIARY called Xabre Graphics Inc has bought the graphics chip business from US company Trident Microsystems and has notebook products on its mind.

Xabre Graphics Inc, previously spun off from SIS, will make notebook parts and graphics chips using its partner UMC.

Trident's XP4 is used in a number of different notebooks and this will give UMC, which effectively owns SIS and therefore any of its subsidiaries, another string to its chipset bow.

UMC has, in the last six to seven months, effectively picked up ALI's chipset business, SIS, and now Trident's graphics business too.

This is consolidation with something of a vengeance. µ
