Over half of mobile phones sold in USA are 3G

Razr rules the roost

THE STRATEGY Analytics ProductTRAX program released its Q3 list of top-selling consumer handsets in the US market.

Motorola, with its Razr and Krzr, and LG, collectively accounted for seven of the top ten best-selling consumer handsets. But Motorola is making less money per unit than the other manufacturrers.

"Overall the average retail price paid for these top ten handsets was 19 percent higher than the market average; and we continue to see strong upgrade dynamics continue to supplement US market growth," stated Barry Gilbert, a researching veep.

"Motorola, despite selling four of the top ten models in Q3, realized an ASP of only $80, nearly 40 percent lower than the group average."

US Q3 2007 Best-selling consumer handsets
1. Motorola RAZR V3
2. Motorola RAZR V3m
3. LG VX8300
4. Apple iPhone
5. LG Chocolate VX8550/8500
6. Motorola MOTOKRZR K1m
7. Samsung SGH-A707
8. LG VX5300
9. Sanyo Katana II
10. Motorola V323i/V325i

3G devices accounted for 55 percent of these top selling device volumes. " That share will continue to grow during Q4," reckons Chris Ambrosio, a director in the Wireless Practice at the firm.

He says, while the Iphone gets the headlines, the Sync from Samsung and the Chocolate from LG quietly stole the show in the category of iconic, 3G feature phones.

"Samsung, in particular, is well-positioned to dominate 3G sales during the critical Q4 holiday season," he said.

Is Iphone 3G?

Inquirer is always says that Iphone is not 3G. it is or isn't? (ok, I'm lazy and I'll not search for it). If it isn't, why the hell they put this in the list??

The only problem with 3G...

..is batter life.

I think this is one reason Blackberry doesn't yet have 3G, and relies on EDGE. After picking up a BB recently I was astonished by the batter life, even while browsing the web and downloading numerous applications. If you compare battery life among non-3G and 3G phones, all of the 3G phones have poorer specifications in general, even before you start transferring lots of data.

I'd rather wait an extra second for a page to load than loose a couple of hours of battery life.

Hopefully better batteries and improvements in the 3G chips in '08 will improve the situation.

List

That's the list of top 10 handset. Not the top 10 3G handset.

One thing about the percentage of 3G phone is that people probably bought one without caring. I've got a 3G phone working happily on 2G network.

Most fancy new phone now a days comes with 3G thrown in
