THE REVIEWS on the GeForce 8800 GT are proving fairly spectacular with claims that it performs like a $400 graphics card but only costs $250.
The INQ's own findings were echoed by the likes of Techreport which has got its paws on one to test said that the only area where the GT is behind the more expensive 8800 GTS or the 2900 XT is in memory bandwidth. Even that is not necessarily a bad thing since games produce "richer" pixels that spend more time looping through shader programs and thus occupying on-chip storage like registers and caches.
In the tests the 8800GT kept up with the 8800 GTS 640MB in terms of average frame rates although it hit lower lows of around 10 FPS due to the smaller RAM.
It was actually the best card to play Team Fortress 2 and was right behind the GTS in BioShock.
Playing Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Direct X mode the more expensive GTS had a few problems while the GT sailed through. It is worthwhile noting that the Radeon HD 2900 XT, which lists for $399, didn't even get close. The testers also found Radeon was a lot noisier.

They are already charging more than they should; the card was advertised £130 pre release but is selling £170-£200 everywhere I have seen.

So much for being able to SLI a pair for around the price of a single 8800GTS.

Don’t get me wrong, they are worth it, but they shouldn’t hype one price then offer another when launched.
Shader pipeline stalls produce "richer" pixels do they? Maybe you mean a more "mature" pixel since they spend more time "ageing"?
It means that games are not as hungry for raw bandwidth as for pixel processing. And modern games need so "rich" pixels that bandwidth does not play a major role. As can be seen in radeon 512bit vs 8800 384bit, the wider bus doesn't give much advantage.
Although we get stiffed in Euroland for price, I have seen a 8800GT in EBuyer for £154. Not bad really when I consider that the first wave of stock 7900GT's used to cost £215.

Can't buy one yet as I want to see how the 1GB 8800GT compares with the 3850 / 3870's.

Who wants to buy another card with no DX10.1? AMD will have this feature and that's just more future proof. Just because N doesnt have one on the market now. Doesnt mean that they will not have one in the coming months. AMD's RV670 would be the right pick because of the DX10.1 alone.
I just got a XFX 8800 GT Extreme Ed. 640/1900 = 11082 3D Marks. 1800 more than my EVGA 576/1700 320MB and it costs less! THis is using a stock standard E6750 @ 2.66Ghz CPU & 2 Gig 1066 Ram.

Oh NO!!! My GeForce 8800GT won't have support for DX10.1 *sniff* *sniff* *waaahh* What am I going to do about the pile of DX10.1 games I'm needing to play on my computer, which exclusively runs Linux??

*sigh*
Guess I'll have to get the RV670 and wait a year or two before the it gets Linux drivers for me to use my computer again.
Dabs did actually put theirs out at £140, but once they looked around and saw everyone else's prices it went straight to £170. So I'm guessing the RRP is pretty low, but until the ATI's come out we won't see those prices.

dude you're broken... here you are talking about DX when you have a linux desktop.. you dont know what you're talkin.

as if NV will take a year before they implement dx10.1 cards. and who cares about dx10.1? how many dx10 games are even out yet?
erm, thats what the guy was saying..he uses linux so therefor dx10.1 is no loss to him.
Thought that was pretty obvious.
Back on topic, i hear that dx10.1 adds very little and 1 of these things it adds is enforced 4x aa so get ready for even lower fps in dx10 games than u already have cos once its enforced 4x aa then ur not turning it off.
Stupid imo but hey were talking about microsoft here.
