Intel's Itanic only sells 500 systems

Slow return on investment, what?
Wed Dec 12 2001, 17:09
A REPORT ON C'T claimed that Intel has only sold 500-Itanium based systems since the product was officially launched earlier this year.

The systems do not count Compaq Proliants which although launched have not yet shipped owing to a sighting which prevented the firm from selling them.

The information on c't is drawn from an analysts report, but it's the kind of information that Intel would never directly give.

Intel is supposed to be currently piloting McKinley processors but we don't know if there are any out there in the wild yet.

The processor's launch has been postponed until the end of the first quarter next year.

We don't know how many billions Intel has spent in the last seven years developing the Itanic but the return-on-investment can't start kicking in for years yet, if the figures are true.

You can find the c't story here. ยต
