AMD's Altair FX is a 6MB SOI 65 nanometre thingie

WE MANAGED to dig out a few more details about the real Quad core codenamed Altair FX. It will work at 2.7 to 2.9GHz and will end up with 2MB of dedicated L2 cache memory and an additional 2MB of shared L3 cache memory. When we say dedicated, it means that each CPU has 2 MB of L2 memory, total of 4MB of L2 memory plus 2MB of shared L3.

AMD moved fast from 1MB of memory on CPU to a magical 6MB. The CPU comes in the third quarter next year. AMD is still unready to announce the power consumption numbers but we know that Altair FX needs 120 Ampères for the CPU and an additional 20 Ampères for the north bridge. We are certainly talking about 125W or more power dissipation but this will heavily depend on the clock. The IO speed will increase from 2000MHz to 4000MHz or even more. The CPU will have an integrated memory controller, supports the so-called "Cool'n'Quiet, EVP enhanced virus protection, AMD-V marchitecture and it comes in the stunning F(1207)+ package.

Until then you will have to make your peace with the 4X4, QuadFather or commercially known as Quad FX platformance as this one will have to hold things up until next year until the Altair FX shines in the microprocessor firmament. µ
