Cameraphones trump still cameras, bloke reckons

It's not just about pixels, says Scalado

CAMERAPHONES WILL continue to trounce mid-tier digital still cameras (DSCs) thanks to superior software claims Sweden's Scalado.

"Without a doubt, the ability to have fun and share experiences will easily replace the previous benchmarks of megapixels and transfer protocols," says Mats Jacobson, Scalado's CEO.

Illustrating the Iphone's exceptional influence on the cellular world, Jacobson blamed it for showing how cameraphones are becoming much more about creating a good experience, rather than being just about "effects, filters, and the race to produce more and more pixels."

He's referring the the fact that while the Iphone's camera is nothing to shout about, users still rate the device as a great for photo-capturing.

Naturally, Scalado is offering a new tool to enable handset vendors to take the fight forward against still cameras. In this case it is an app called Photoslider which turns a handset into a digital photo frame.

It also offers high-tech face detection technology to automatically find people within photos and then zoom in on their faces during the slide show. Try doing that on a camera!

Scalado's software can be porting to virtually any smartphone OS – not just Symbian. µ
