MORE THAN 1,700 industrious souls working for the Connecticut Department of Administrative Services were dumbfounded to learn their personal details, including some names and Social Security numbers, had been posted on the Interweb for all to find.

One of the workers affected, Ken Clair, told AP: "I would have thought somebody would have been a lot more careful with that information," after receiving notification of the gaffe from his employer.

Some of the information had been viewable since October 2003, The Hartford Courant reported.

A spokesman for the state comptroller's office reckoned, "The majority of people have been very understanding of the situation."

Last week a UK building society was fined nearly a million quid for allowing the posibilty that its customers' data might be compromised. ยต
